On October 6, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai was attacked when a 71-year-old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, threw a shoe at him. Kishore could have expressed his dissent through many legal and respectful ways — writing an open letter, addressing the full Supreme Court bench, petitioning the Bar Council to oppose the CJI, or even approaching the President of India for action. However, a disturbing narrative emerged from certain groups normalizing violence against the highest judicial authority, arguing that instead of a shoe, a gun should have been used.
