Description

Al Jazeera’s Hassan Massoud reported from the Shireen Abu Akleh vessel, a boat in the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying legal teams to support activists detained by Israeli forces. The vessel is documenting alleged violations of humanitarian, international, and maritime law committed by Israel during the interceptions, to be submitted to the International Court of Justice. Massoud said the flotilla remains determined to continue despite repeated Israeli military actions since last night. Several boats have already been stopped by Israeli Navy, but others are pressing ahead towards Gaza. Organisers stress that even if one boat arrives, it symbolises breaking the Israeli siege and solidarity with Gaza’s people. Another flotilla, the Thousand Madleens, left Sicily three days ago and is also en route. The interceptions follow Israel’s detention of activists, including Greta Thunberg, on earlier boats. Dr. James Smith is a British emergency physician who was on the Sumud Flotilla two weeks ago. He says the members of the humanitarian fleet were aware of the risks they faced trying to break Israel's siege of Gaza.
