Description

Bournemouth, once a popular seaside resort, is facing increasing crime and social tensions. Three local hotels, the Roundhouse, Britannia, and Chine are being used to house asylum seekers. Recent incidents include stabbings, threats with weapons, and a machete attack that led to a seven-year prison sentence. Residents and business owners report theft, anti-social behaviour, and drug use in the town. A volunteer group, Safeguard Force, now patrols streets at night, while Dorset Police say the town remains safe, with crime down 3% and anti-social behaviour down 4.6% between April and July 2024. Officials warn the issues could affect tourism, and the Home Office continues to use hotels for temporary asylum accommodation. Mark Dolan speaks with former police officer, Norman Brennan.
