Description
The US government has shut down after the Senate failed to pass a vote to extend federal funding before the midnight deadline on Tuesday. This is America's first shutdown in almost seven years. Due to the shutdown, essential workers such as air traffic controllers, hospital staff, and law enforcement will still have to show up, but they won't be paid. During the last shutdown, many of them called in sick. About 7,50,000 non-essential workers will be sent on unpaid leave. That's a loss of roughly 400 million dollars a day in wages. Even US embassies abroad will feel the impact. The bigger worry is the economic fallout. Shutdowns can drag down America's economy, shaving off 0.1 to 0.2% of GDP growth every week. President Trump has blamed the Democrats for the deadlock. He says he'll lay off workers during the shutdown and cut what he calls "wasteful spending". Maybe it's just a pressure tactic to force Democrats to the table or maybe Trump sees a chance to deliver on his campaign promise of downsizing the US government.
