Description

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), one of the country's top traders' bodies, has estimated India's total Diwali sales at ₹6.05 lakh crore, a record in Indian trading history. Of this, ₹5.4 lakh crore was spent on goods such as footwear, garments, and electronics, while the rest went towards services. The surge marks a sharp rise from last year's Diwali, when Indians spent ₹4.25 lakh crore on goods, a 25% jump from 2024 to 2025. However, US tariffs continue to pose a major challenge for India. US President Donald Trump's 50% tariff on Indian goods has hit exports hard. In September, India's exports to the US fell by nearly 12%, compared to a 7% rise in August. There is, however, a silver lining — exports to other markets grew by almost 11%, up from 6.6% the previous month.
